Dating basal peat: The geochronology of peat initiation revisited

چکیده
Attributing the start of peat growth to an absolute timescale requires dating bottom deposits overlying mineral sediment, often called basal . Peat initiation is reflected in stratigraphy as a gradual transition from sediment increasingly organic material, up where it peat. So far, varying criteria have been used define peat, resulting divergent approaches date initiation. The lack universally applicable and quantitative definition, combined with multiple concerns that raised previously regarding radiocarbon may result apparent ages are either too old or young for timing Here, we aim formulate updated recommendations We provide conceptual framework supports use matter (OM) gradient reproducible definition mineral-to-peat (i.e., stratigraphical range reflecting timespan process) layer defined deposit). Selection samples challenging due poor preservation plant macrofossils representativity humic humin dates age uncertain. therefore analyse based on three highly detailed sequences dates, including fractions obtained bulk samples. Our case study peatland Netherlands currently harbours bog vegetation, but biostratigraphical analyses show during vegetation was mesotrophic. Results most accurate recommendable 14 C If these unattainable, fraction provides best alternative interpreted terminus-ante-quem potential large difference between (up ?1700 years macrofossil ages, even larger differences humins) suggests studies reusing existing should take great care data interpretation. potentially long process (with medians ?1000, ?1300 ?1500 within our peatland) demonstrates choices sampling size resolution need be well substantiated. summarise findings set peats, advocate widespread OM determination obtain low-cost, eases intercomparison studies. • present transition. Influence of Substitution of Peat with Iranian Zeolite(Clinoptilolite) In Peat Medium on Ficus Benjamina Growth
This experiment was designed to characterize the effects of size and concentration of an Iranian clinoptilolite zeolite on the growth ofFicus benjamina (starlight) in peat base media. Ficus benjamina was stock rooted and grown in a peat consisting perlite (2: 1 v/v) (P: Pe), zeolite (10, 20, 30 and 40 v/v %, two sizes 0.5-3 mm and 3-8 mm) instead of peat in P: Pe (2: 1 v/v) media. متن کاملConstructing deposition chronologies for peat deposits using radiocarbon dating
Radiocarbon dating is one of the main methods used to establish peat chronologies. This article reviews the basis of the method and its application to dating of peat deposits. Important steps in the radiocarbon dating procedure are described, including selection and extraction of material (and fractions) for dating, chemical and physical preparation of media suitable for measurements, measureme...
متن کاملLeaf size indices and structure of the peat swamp forest
Leaf size indices of the tree species in the peatland of Agusan del Sur in Mindanao in Philippines was examined to deduce the variation of forest structure and observed forest zonation. Using raunkiaer and webb’s leaf size classification, the leaf morphometrics of seven tree species consistently found on the established sampling plots were determined. The species includes Ternstroemia phi...
متن کاملInfluence of peat formation conditions on the transformation of peat deposit organic matter
The paper studies the individual composition of n-alkanes, polycycloaromatic hydrocarbons, steroids, bi-, tri-, and pentacyclic terpenoids of two peat deposits of rich fen Kirek located in Western Siberia. Considering the individual n-alkanes concentrations, some indexes were calculated to estimate the humidity during peat formation. It was shown that the pH of peat medium primarily affects ste...
